Qualitative Research on Empowerment of Mentally Disabled Persons Participating in Stigma-Overcome Campaign

Abstract
This Study was to investigate empowerment mentally disabled persons who participated in stigma-overcome campaign, through an individual depth interview for nine mentally disabled persons using rehabilitation facilities and qualitative research. The subjects were participants in 2003 campaign with medical approach and 2004 campaign for empowerment practice.
This research showed voluntary participation in stigma-overcome campaigns was painful to them but after campaigns, they experienced that they had power. Especially, they realized empowerment in self-confidence, control of life, personal relations, hopes. In other words, it turned out mentally disabled persons acquired empowerment through activities in front of peoples and alternative opportunities in the course of these activities.
The results of research provide many issues to an expert planning rehabilitation services of mental health agency. A point of view of menal health expert on mentally disabled persons must be changed and participating opportunities as a member of a society must be provided to them more. Real empowerment will be achieved with acknowledgement of the difference between mentally disabled persons and the public.
